What is Poly-B?
Poly-B, short for polybutylene, is a flexible grey plastic piping that was commonly installed in Canadian homes from the 1980s through the 1990s.
Many homes throughout the Central Okanagan still have Poly-B plumbing today. While some systems continue to function without obvious problems, the material is no longer used in new plumbing installations and homeowners may choose to replace it as their home ages.
What Does Poly-B Look Like?
Poly-B is most commonly a flexible grey plastic pipe, although it can sometimes appear in other colours. You may be able to spot exposed sections near your water heater, under sinks, in utility rooms or where plumbing connects to fixtures.
Look for “PB2110” printed on the pipe, which is a common indicator of polybutylene piping.
If you're not sure whether your home has Poly-B, we can help you identify it and talk through your options.
Should You Replace Your Poly-B?
Having Poly-B doesn't necessarily mean you have an immediate plumbing problem. However, because the piping is now decades old, many homeowners choose to replace it proactively rather than wait for a leak.
You may also be thinking about Poly-B replacement if you're:
Renovating your home
Planning to sell or purchase a property
Experiencing leaks or plumbing concerns
Updating other aging plumbing
Looking for greater peace of mind about the plumbing behind your walls
Every home is different. We'll take a look at your existing system, explain what we find and help you decide what makes sense for your home.
What Does a Poly-B Replacement Involve?
Whole-home Poly-B replacement involves removing or bypassing existing Poly-B supply lines and installing new PEX piping throughout your home.
Every home is different, so the amount of work depends on the layout of your plumbing and how easily the existing pipes can be accessed. Some openings in walls or ceilings may be necessary.
Calen will assess your plumbing and explain what the replacement involves before work begins.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does all Poly-B need to be replaced?
Not necessarily. The condition, age and configuration of the plumbing can vary from home to home. Calen can assess your system and provide straightforward advice about your options.
Do you have to open the walls?
Some drywall access may be necessary to reach piping concealed inside walls and ceilings. How much depends on your home's layout. We'll explain where access is likely to be needed before work begins and can recommend a trusted professional to handle the drywall repairs afterward.
How long does a Poly-B replacement take?
The timeline depends on the size and layout of your home and the complexity of the plumbing. After assessing the system, Calen can give you an estimated timeline for the work.
Can Poly-B be replaced during a renovation?
Yes. A renovation can be a good opportunity to replace aging plumbing, particularly when walls or ceilings are already being opened for other work.
How much does Poly-B replacement cost?
The cost depends on the size and layout of your home, the amount of piping being replaced and how easily it can be accessed. Calen will assess the existing plumbing and provide an estimate based on the work required.
